Alabama State Tree
Longleaf Pine
Pinaceae Pinus palustris’
The Alabama State Tree, the Longleaf Pine, has beautiful feathery evergreen leaves that grow from 8 to 18 inches long. In addition to having the longest needles, the Longleaf Pine is noted for also having the largest pine cones of any Pine tree in the Eastern United States. A single pine cone averages from 6 – 10 inches long. The Longleaf pine is a medium-sized tree with a straight trunk and very coarse branches with tufted needles at the ends. This Beautiful Pine grows best on well-drained sandy soils.
Longleaf pine trees once covered 30 to 60 million acres of the southeastern United States. Sadly, due to 200 years of logging and forest clearing its numbers are greatly reduced. The Longleaf pine takes 100 to 150 years to become fully mature and can live to be 300 years old !
In 1949, the first designated Alabama state tree was the Southern pine tree. Because there are so many kinds of pine trees, the Southern Longleaf Pine was specified as the Official state tree of Alabama by the Legislature in 1997. The Longleaf Pine is the state tree for Alabama and North Carolina. Alabama celebrates Arbor Day the Last full week in February.
