Delaware State Tree
American Holly
‘Aquifoliaceae Ilex opaca’
The American Holly is a small tree, with a thick crown and pyramidal form, usually with branches all the way to the ground. The red berries mature in September to October and remain on the tree into Winter. They are 1/4 inch in diameter and contain ribbed nutlets.
Flowers are apparent from April to June. Dioecious, dull green-white, male flowers on 3 – 7 flowered cymes, female flowers are singular and have a pleasant fragrance.
Considered by many to be one of the most spectacular trees in Winter because of the beauty of the Holly Leaf. The Dark green and shiny leaves are thick and leathery, eliptical in shape, an average of 2 to 4 inches long, pale green below with entire or spiney-toothed margins. The American Holly is one of the most beautiful trees I have ever seen, especially after a snowfall. Delaware celebrates Arbor Day the last Friday in April.
