Illinois State Tree
White oak
‘Fagaceae Quercus alba’

The Leaves of the White Oak are hairless, bright green above and whitish below and grow from 4 to 7 inches long. The bark can be whitish or ashy gray, varying from scaly to irregularly platy or blocky. On older trees it is not uncommon to see smooth patches. The White Oak is a large tree and when not crowded can grow to have rugged, irregular crowns that are wide spreading. In the forest where they must compete for room and sunlight, the crowns (tops) are more upright and oval. The White Oak is the state tree for Illinois and Connecticut. Illinois celebrates Arbor Day the last Friday in April.
