One of the most prominent traits about older Northern red oaks is its bark.
The shallow furrows in the bark form a pattern resembling ski tracts.
The Leaf of this Oak is simple looking. Grows about 5 to 8 inches long, oblong in shape with 7 to 11 bristle-tipped lobes.Staminate flowers appear with the leaves in April or May. The acorns form up to 1 inch long and are nearly round. The cap is flat and thick and practically covers the entire acorn. Depending on where it is growing it matures medium-sized to large.
Iowa celebrates Arbor Day the last Friday in April.
