Kansas State Tree
Cottonwood
‘Salicaceae Populus deltoides’

The Cottonwood is a large tree with a clear bole and has an open spreading crown which gives the Cottonwood a somewhat vase-shaped form. The bark is gray to yellow-green and very smooth when young. As it matures the bark turns gray with thick ridges and deep furrows. The tree bears cottony seeds, about 1/4 inch long borne in a dehiscent capsule. The veined leaves are simple, about 3 to 6 inches long and are somewhat triangular in shape.
The Cottonwood is the state tree for Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming. Kansas celebrates Arbor day the last Friday in March.
