Yellow Poplar
‘Magnoliaceae Liriodendron tulipifera’
The leaves of the Yellow Poplar are 4 lobed, extend from 4 to 8 inches long and are somewhat shaped like a tulip. The flowers are showy, but high up in the tree. These beautiful blooms last from April to June and are about 2 1/2 inches long and have yellowish – green petals and an orange corolla. When mature, this tree is one of the favorite trees for the sapsucker. This tree is also the state tree of Indiana. The original state tree for Kentucky was the Kentucky Coffee tree but was changed to the Tulip Poplar. The Yellow Poplar is the state tree for Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee. Kentucky celebrates Arbor day the first Friday in April.
