The bark of the Bald Cypress is fibrous, red-brown but may be gray where exposed to the weather. Older bark may appear somewhat scaly. The Bald Cypress is a large tree with a pyramid-shaped crown, cylindrical bole a fluted or buttressed base. The leaves are Linear and small, from 1/4 to 3/4 inch long and green to yellow-green in color. The flowers in the males appear in drooping long panicles. The females are subglobose, peltate scales, and bloom near the end of branches. Louisiana celebrates Arbor day the third Friday in January.
