Maine State Tree
Eastern White Pine
‘Pinaceae Pinus strobus’

The Eastern White Pine is a large evergreen tree with a very straight stem. The crown is conical when young, but as it matures it developes wispy, horizontal branches. The ‘leaves’ grow from 3 to 5 inches long, with five blue-green, slender needles per fascicle – the needles appear blue because of 3 or more lines of stomata.
The male pines bear cylindrical, yellow flowers in clusters near branch tips, the females are light green tinged in red. The Eastern White Pine is the state tree for Maine and Michigan. Maine celebrates Arbor day the third full week in May.
