Ponderosa Pine
‘Pinaceae Pinus ponderosa’
The Ponderosa Pine is a large Evergreen tree with an irregular crown, eventually developing a flat top or short conical crown. The Pine Cones are ovoid, approximately 3 to 6 inches long red-brown in color, and bear a slender prickle. When crushed, the pine needles have a ‘citrusy’ turpentine odor. The bark of the Ponderosa Pine is very nearly black on young trees, developing cinnamon colored plates and deep furrows on more mature specimens. Montana celebrates Arbor Day the last Friday in April.
