The Bristlecone Pine is typically small and grows very slowly. The bark of the young Bristlecone is thin, smooth, and grayish white later becoming furrowed and reddish brown. Female pine cones occur singly or in pairs near the ends of branches. Old trees on harsh, windy sites may have only a few strands of bark remaining in crevices where it is protected from sandblasting winds. Northern Nevada celebrates Arbor day April 23th, while Southern Nevada celebrates February 28th.
