New Jersey State Tree
Northern red oak
‘Fagaceae Quercus rubra’
One of the most prominent traits about older Northern red oaks is its bark. The shallow furrows in the bark form a pattern resembling ski tracts. The Leaf of this Oak is simple looking. Grows about 5 to 8 inches long, oblong in shape with 7 to 11 bristle-tipped lobes. Staminate flowers appear with the leaves in April or May. The acorns form up to 1 inch long and are nearly round. The cap is flat and thick and practically covers the entire acorn. Depending on where it is growing it matures medium-sized to large. The Northern Red Oak is also the state tree for Iowa. New Jersey celebrates Arbor day the last Friday in April.
