American Elm
‘Ulmaceae Ulmus americana’

The American Elm is sometimes known as White Elm or American White Elm. When growing in open spaces, the trunk is usually ‘divided into several large, ascending and arching limbs, ending in a maze of graceful drooping branchlets’. Elms are extremely hardy and can live over 275 years. The flowers bloom in early spring and are small, purplish-brown with no petals. Elms are naturally found along streams and flourish in floodplains and bottomlands. The American Elm is the state tree for North Dakota and Massachusetts. North Dakota celebrates Arbor day the first Friday in May.
