‘Carya illinoinensis’

The Pecan is a large vase shaped tree that can reach heights well over 150 feet with a diamer of over 7 feet! The heavy wood is used for handles and pulpwood. The male and female flowers are found on the same tree. The flowers of the male are hanging, yellowish green catkins, often in pairs of three at about 4 to 5 inches long. The females are smaller, 4 angled spikes and yellowish green. The nuts are thin shelled approximately 1 ½ to 2 inches long. They usually occur in clusters on the Pecan tree. The Pecan Juglandaceae tree is slow growing and often takes 20 years to begin bearing pecans. Texas celebrates Arbor day the last Friday in April.
