What is Organic Material ?
Dr. Fred Magdoff of the University of Vermont has finally explained the unexplainable…
He states there are three kinds of Soil Organic Matter, also called SOM as the following;
the living,
the dead and
the very dead.
Healthy, productive soil already has a good proportion of organic matter in it.The trick to having an outstanding plant or garden is to successfully increase the quality of your soil by regularly adding organic matter. It is important to amend your soil by adding organic matter; leaf mold, grass compost, biodegradable home and kitchen scrap materials.
Improving the soil is an ongoing process since organic matter contains carbon. Carbon is a source of energy for all of the microbes in your soil. The microbes are essential for successful backyard soil conservation and improvement to keep your soil healthy. Organic material or organic matter refers to any material that is capable of decay or decomposition. Soil organic matter (SOM) is a key indicator of soil quality. If you are unsure what your soil needs in order to be healthy, contact your local Agriculture Extension Office for information on soil testing in your area.
